Welcome To The Humber Yawl Club Website

The Humber Yawl Club, originally established in 1883, is one of the oldest sailing clubs in the UK. It is run solely by its members and provides facilities on both North and South Banks of the River Humber at Brough and Winteringham. Both Havens provide drying pontoon moorings for members, with access up to 2 hours either side of high water, depending on tidal conditions and the draft of vessels.

Both Havens offer a range of facilities which include boat hoists, mast hoists, slip ways, winches and tractors. These facilities are overseen by Mates and Management Committees at each Haven, with all equipment being meticulously maintained and tested in accordance with current legislation. Appropriate training is available for the safe use of these facilities. Storage ashore is available for members who wish to maintain their craft during the winter period.

Each Haven has a Club House, a fully equipped kitchen, toilet facilities and showers. In addition, Brough has a licensed bar available to all members, manned by volunteers. The Brough bar is open on Thursday evenings to members and their guests, who must be signed in. The bar is also often open following races and sometimes at the weekend during the summer.

The Club is affiliated to the RYA and has been a recognised shorebased centre since 1984. Training courses are held regularly and include RYA recognised qualifications from Competent Crew to Yacht Master Ocean, as well as radio courses. Sailing from the Club is a mixture of cruising and racing, with some of our members participating in local and National competitions. Many of our members have undertaken ocean voyages and extended cruises over the years and regularly visit the North East Coast, the Wash Ports and the Netherlands. The powerful and ever changing tidal Humber can present novice or inland sailors with real challenges and experienced members are always willing to offer help and advice where necessary.

The cruiser racing fleet and the expanding Squib fleet have a healthy racing programme throughout the sailing season under the RYA NHC Scheme. The HYC regatta is held in the Spring and is open to visiting yachts by arrangement. Racing yachts regularly support the regattas held at other clubs situated on the Estuary as well as Cowes Week and the Fastnet Races. The members at Winteringham tend to engage in cruising activities. Our members travel from as far as the Midlands, North Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and the West Riding and tend to spend long weekends on their yachts. There is a full social programme at both Havens throughout the year and all members are encouraged to attend.

We actively encourage members from all walks of life, financial backgrounds and the local community. We are proud that the HYC is a self help club and our members are encouraged to work together to keep sailing within the grasp of as many as possible. If you are a complete beginner, an experienced cruiser or an enthusiastic racer you will be assured of a warm welcome at the Humber Yawl Club. Come along and pay us a visit!

Fair winds and good sailing!

David Deakin, Captain, Humber Yawl Club
